Barrett promoted to International Development post

John Barrett, MP for Edinburgh West, has been promoted to shadow Under-Secretary of State for International Development by Liberal Democrat party leader Menzies Campbell.

Mr Barrett has spent the past 5 years on the International Development Select Committee, which has produced influential reports on issues ranging from humanitarian responses to natural disasters, the future of global trade talks and the fight against HIV and Aids.

The Edinburgh West MP will also continue with his shadow ministerial duties in Scotland:

Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, Lynne Featherstone said:

“There are few people in the parliamentary party who have such a wealth of first-hand experience and knowledge of development issues.

“John will bring a wealth of talent and understanding to this new post and I am looking forward to working with him as part of our international development team."

John Barrett said:

“The strength of feeling about international development issues was never more clearly shown than when 250,000 people, myself included, marched through Edinburgh city centre for the Make Poverty History march in June of 2005.

“I will use my new position to ensure that development issues remain at the top of the agenda and that the Governments own performance in this area is subject to thorough scrutiny.”

Notes

John Barrett has been appointed an International Development Spokesman and Deputy to Lynne Featherstone, the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for International Development.
